Frequently Asked Questions About Intrinsic Mind

Covid Plan

Hi Everyone!,

As we absorb the new information available regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, we wanted to circle back with you to let you know exactly what we are doing in-studio to keep our community as safe and healthy as possible.

WHAT WE’RE DOING:

1) Cleaning all equipment with disinfecting wipes.

2) Eliminating Bands (you can purchase your own if you would like to use) in the Hotfit Pilates Room until further notice.

3) Working with our cleaning teams to increase the sanitation of our bathrooms and common areas throughout the day

4) Disinfecting all touchable surfaces, including but not limited to, the front desk, studio, bathroom door handles, sink knobs, kitchen tap.

5) We have set up plastic cups for filtered water in the kitchen. Dispose when finished.
It is recommended you always bring your own water bottle.

6) Washing our hands repeatedly throughout the day as well as following all below precautions as suggested by the CDC

In addition to the above, we are also providing disinfecting hand sanitizer gel and wipes for you to use before class, as well as offering additional hand sanitizing stations throughout the studios for your convenience. Reception, Studio and Pigeon hole area.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: As the CDC has recommended, your #1 defense is to wash your hands for 30 seconds repeatedly throughout the day, as well as refrain from touching your face – especially your eyes, nose & mouth. If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

Be mindful of close contact with others.

Regardless of sweat level, please machine wash workout clothes after each use.

Make sure to cover your mouth/nose (e.g. inside bent elbow) when sneezing or coughing. Please discard any tissues immediately after use.
Keep your immunity as strong as possible – good night sleep, eat several servings of veggies and fruits each day, limit/eliminate alcohol use, regular exercise, etc.

If you’re feeling sick, – please stay home until you are feeling 100% better.

Thank you

Its my first class at Intrinsic Mind Studio, what do I need to know?

Please arrive at least 15 minutes early for your first class to sign up. It is recommended that you sign up online before your first class (download the app) via Mindbody , this ensures you are updated on changes to class and allows you to completely focus on the Yoga rather than memberships and computers.

Please refer to the timetable to determine which class is right for you and note whether it is a HEATED class. Please do not hesitate to call us on 0438 520 219 Leisa OR email us at myintrinsicmind@gmail.com

How do I book into classes on my phone?

There is a tutorial on how to book into classes using the MindBody app here

What should I bring to class? How should I prepare?

Please bring a mat (mats are available if needed at a small fee) and water.

If you are attending a heated class please bring a large towel that can cover your mat. These are also available for hire if you need

Please wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move in. Shoes and socks will be removed during class and placed in our area for personal belongings.

Please do not eat right before class as many of the movement and postures work through the internal organs. Over time you will get to know your body and how long is appropriate for you to not eat for before class.

Please drink an adequate amount of water to stay hydrated before and after class.

How often should I practice?

You can practice as often as you like, but you will already see great benefits from practicing 2-3 times per week.

Do you have showers?

No, unfortunately we do not have showers.

When should I arrive at the studio?

Our Intrinsic Mind studio doors opens 15 minutes before class for registration and our studio doors are locked during classes for security.

How long is a class?

Our 6am classes are 60 minutes.  55 Minutes of Yoga Movement and up to 5 minutes guided relaxation and focus time leaving you ready and revitalised for your day.

Hot pilates is 60 minutes

For all other routinely scheduled classes please allow up to 75 minutes. Once in the studio you will be in the capable hands of one of our experienced Intrinsic Mind Yoga Teachers who will lead you through a beautifully orchestrated Asana (movement) class of approximately 60 minutes, then into relaxation in the form of Meditation, Pranayama (breath exercises), Yoga Nidra, guided visualisation or sensory awareness listening to music. Relaxation will be between 5 and 15 minutes depending on the teacher and class.

You will also notice that we have added a 1.5 hour yoga class on Saturdays.  Reap the deep benefits of this Yoga Flow.

What if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding it is your responsibility to check with your medical practitioner whether yoga movement classes are suitable for you. Please be aware that you may be more comfortable attending one of our pre – post natal class rather than a public class as public classes are not tailor made to wholly nurture the woman’s body at this most precious time.

If your medical practitioner agrees, then you are welcome in our classes unless they are labelled as HEATED. Excess heat is a contraindication during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Please call Leisa to discuss further 0438520219.

What does ‘Hot/heated class’ mean?

Heating in our studio is supplied by Heat-On’s FIR heating technology which is highly desired for Hot Yoga studios. Heat-On’s 1600W yoga specific heating panels have been chemically tuned to emit a 9 micron meter frequency, this allows the human body to absorb more than 98% of this heating energy! This provides exceptional deep tissue penetration and detox. You will see the panels on the ceiling when you visit.

For heated classes we set the thermostat to 32-40 degrees. Our aim is to obtain the benefits of warmth and heating whilst maintaining a sense of comfort within the body. Yoga is about honouring and nurturing the body, mind and soul, not torturing ourselves.

Those who are devoted to the practice say hot yoga has all kinds of benefits. The one that’s touted most often is detoxification: heavy sweating is said to help flush toxins from the skin. “The heat also allows you to go a little more deeply and safely into the postures,”says Leisa Timms, the owner of Intrinsic Mind. You’re really warming up the muscles and you can really approach the postures from a safe place (without force).” Working in a heated room also elevates the heart rate, which makes the body work harder. “It’s really for people who want a more intense workout and for those who want to develop strength, flexibility and tone along with a cardiovascular workout.” She also says working in heat helps the body relax, improves breathing (which helps conditions like asthma) and focuses the mind, which develops better mental concentration.

Hot classes are heated to 38 – 40 degrees
Hot Fitness / HIIT / Pilates classes are heated to 37 degrees
Warm classes are heated to 32 degrees

Our teachers have access to an on/off switch for the heating panels so they can keep the temperature comfortable in the studio regardless of the outside weather. This also allows our teachers to work with our student community in determining the warmth or heat of classes.
If you are attending a HEATED class please make sure you drink plenty of fluids before and after class. PLEASE BRING A TOWEL LARGE ENOUGH TO COVER YOUR YOGA MAT, A YOGA MAT AND A BOTTLE OF WATER. Water is available for purchase and mats and towels are available for hire in the studio if needed.

**Heated classes are not suitable for people pregnant or breastfeeding**.

Hot Yoga Contraindications

Contraindications of Hot Yoga

The ‘Do’s and ‘Don’ts’ In all situations, hydration is a requirement for Hot Yoga. Drinking lots of water both before and after class is a must, or it could result in fainting and medical complications including overheating! Do not apply body lotion to your body prior to class. In the rare event that you experience pain and/or discomfort, immediately discontinue class.

Medications

Individuals who are using prescription drugs should seek the advice of their Doctor or a pharmacist for possible changes in the drugs’ effects when the body is exposed to high levels of heat and/or elevated body temperature. Diuretics, barbiturates, and beta-blockers may impair the body’s natural heat loss mechanisms. Some over-the-counter drugs such as antihistamines may also cause the body to be more prone to heat stroke.

The Elderly

The ability to maintain core body temperature decreases with age. This is primarily due to circulatory conditions and decreased sweat gland function. The body must be able to activate its natural cooling processes in order to maintain core body temperature.

Cardiovascular Conditions

Individuals with cardiovascular conditions or problems (hypertension, hypotension, congestive heart failure, or impaired coronary circulation) or those who are taking medications which might affect blood pressure should exercise extreme caution when exposed to prolonged heat. Heat stress increases cardiac output and blood flow due to the body’s effort to transfer internal body heat to the outside environment via the skin (perspiration) and respiratory system. This takes place primarily due to major changes in the heart rate, which has the potential to increase by 30 beats per minute for each degree of increase in core body temperature.

Alcohol / Alcohol Abuse

Contrary to popular belief, it is not advisable to attempt to “sweat out” a hangover. Alcohol intoxication decreases a person’s judgment. Therefore this person may not realize it when the body has a negative reaction to high heat. Alcohol also increases the heart rate, which may be further increased by heat stress.

Chronic Conditions/Diseases

Associated with the Reduced Ability to Perspire Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, central nervous system tumours, and diabetes with neuropathy are conditions that are associated with impaired sweating.

Other Conditions Hot Yoga is not suited to

Hot Yoga should be avoided by anyone who is predisposed to bleeding, Haemophiliacs. An individual that has a fever should not come to class. Insensitivity to Heat: An individual that has insensitivity to heat should also not come to a hot yoga class.

Pregnant women

You should consult a Doctor before starting Hot Yoga because fetal damage can occur with a certain elevated body temperature. Power Yoga may be a better option, if you already have a regular class. The first trimester should be treated very carefully as maximal stretching of ligaments and tendons can mean you are partial to overstretching.

Menstruation

Heating of the lower back area of women during the menstrual period may temporarily increase their menstrual flow. Some women endure this process to gain the pain relief commonly associated with their cycle, whereas others simply choose to avoid Hot Yoga at that time of the month, it is a personal choice. Inversions should not be practiced during these weeks as blood flow is reversed unnaturally.

Joint Injury

If you have a recent acute joint injury, it should not be heated for the first 48 hours after an injury or until the hot and swollen symptoms subside. If you have a joint or joints that are chronically hot and swollen, these joints may respond poorly to vigorous heating of any kind.

Enclosed Infections

Vigorous heating is strictly contraindicated in cases of enclosed infections, be it dental, in joints, or in any other tissues.

Implants

Metal pins, rods, artificial joints, or any other surgical implants – always seek medical advise first

Post Class Advice

You might feel euphoric after class and full of life! Great news, don’t be concerned this may last for several hours afterwards! Like any exercise, different muscles that have been neglected and suddenly re-used may experience discomfort. View this as a positive sign that every muscle is awakening to the joy of your yoga practice! You may experience sickness, headaches or light headedness after class, overnight or into the next day. You could be dehydrated and need lots of water on board! Always ensure relaxing breathing throughout the sequence to optimise oxygenation of the body. You may look red or blotchy or have hot flushes. All of these are common signs of flushing out toxins. Make sure you wash thoroughly after class.
