Standard Mental Health First Aid Refresher

Standard Refresher MHFA

This refresher course is a 4-hour face-to-face course that allows people who have previously completed a 12 hour Standard MHFA course to refresh their knowledge and skills.

For people who are Accredited MHFAiders, the refresher course offers an opportunity to extend their accreditation for a further 3 years.

For those who have not yet completed a Standard MHFA course, check out our Standard MHFA 2-day course here

The Mental Health First Aid Training Course is delivered by Jen Ince, a qualified and passionate MHFA instructor

Why Mental Health First Aid?

Mental health first aid is the help provided to a person who is developing a mental health problem, or who is in a mental health crisis (e.g., the person is suicidal or has had a traumatic experience). Like physical first aid, mental health first aid is given until the person receives professional help or until the crisis resolves.

Mental health first aid strategies are taught in evidence-based training courses authored by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia and delivered by accredited MHFA Instructors across the country. Intrinsic Mind offers a variety of MHFA Courses as authored by MHFA Australia, delivered by Instructors who are currently accredited by MHFA Australia.

MHFA is an award-winning program and is included in SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidenced-Based Programs and Practices

Evaluations consistently show that MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness. It is also associated with decreased stigma and an increase in help provided over time.

What the 4-hour Standard MHFA Refresher course covers

This course gives participants an opportunity to refresh the knowledge and skills learnt during the 12-hour Standard Mental Health First Aid Course. You will:

  • Gain an understanding of the latest research in the mental health field
  • Learn the 3 key actions for helping someone feeling suicidal
  • Work through complex mental health first aid interactions
  • Practice mental health first aid skills.

Who is this course for?:

Anyone who has attended a Standard MHFA 12 hour course is able to attend this training. Accredited MHFAiders are able to use the refresher training to extend their accreditation for a further 3 years.

If you are an MHFAider, you can still attend a refresher course, however, you will not be eligible to become an Accredited MHFAider. If you wish to become accredited you will need to complete the Standard MHFA 12 hour course and then complete the accreditation assessment.

As the refresher courses are designed to build on the knowledge and skills taught in the 12-hour course, these courses are not appropriate for someone who has not already completed a 12 hour Standard MHFA course.

Deadline for completing a refresher course

You may take the Refresher course up to 3 months after your 3-year accreditation has expired.
